Jay Capperauld Tickets

Scotland-based composer and saxophonist Jay Capperauld (born 1989) graduated Performance with distinction from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in 2012 after studying Saxophone under the tutelage of Josef Pacewicz. As a saxophonist, Jay has worked with some of the major Scottish Orchestras including; the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Scottish Ballet, Scottish Opera and the Scottish Festival Orchestra and also performs regularly with the Scotland-based Saxophone Quartet, Sax-Ecosse.

As a composer, Jay Capperauld graduated Masters in Composition with Distinction from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in 2014 under the tutelage of Dr Gordon McPherson.   Jay has written for various Artists & Ensembles including; BBC Philharmonic, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, The National Youth Orchestra of Scotland, Psappha Ensemble, Hebrides Ensemble, The Wallace Collection, Red Note Ensemble, Workers Union Ensemble, the Glasgow New Music Expedition, the Glasgow School of Art Choir and has written solo works for Katherine Bryan of the RSNO, Alison Teale of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the BBC Young Musician of the Year 2012, Laura van der Heijden, and also wrote a Piano Concerto ‘Endlings’ for the pianist James Willshire which premiered with the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland Symphony Orchestra during their Spring Tour in 2018. Jay more recently worked closely with the rising star saxophonist, Lewis Banks, on a new cross-media collaboration called 'Afterlife' in which Jay has composed an hour's worth of music for Alto Saxophone and Piano which was performed alongside a newly commissioned film by the Manchester-based filmmaker Paul Wright. Jay has had his works conducted under many prestigious batons including Martyn Brabbins, Thomas Dausgaard, Ilan Volkov, Sir James MacMillan, Jessica Cottis, Peter Wiegold, Garry Walker and Pierre-André Valade. 

Jay’s works have also been broadcast on BBC Radio 3 as part of its ‘New Year, New Music’ programme, BBC Radio Scotland as part of Classics Unwrapped and as part of BBC Radio 3’s new music flagship ‘Hear and Now’.  Jay has also won a handful of prestigious awards including winning 1st prize in the Craig Armstrong Award 2014; 1st prize Dinah Wolfe Memorial Prize 2013; and 1st prize in the inaugural Heidi Cupp Award 2013.  Jay has also been awarded the Hilda Anderson-Deane Award 2014 for All-round Excellence in Music upon graduating from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, and has twice received the Patron's Fund Prize (Royal College of Music) for Composition in 2013 and 2014. Jay has also taken part in the inaugural Composers' Hub Scheme 2015/16 as a Composer with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra where he worked intensively with the RSNO under the guidance of composers Brett Dean & Stuart MacRae. 

​Most recently, Jay is continuing a strong collaboration with the flautist, Katherine Bryan, in the development of his new Flute Concerto 'Our Gilded Veins' which has been commissioned by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and will premiere in their upcoming season. Jay has also recently been commissioned by the BBC to composed a new work for the BBC Proms 2020 in which his newest piece 'Circadian Refrains (172 Days Until Dawn)' will premiere with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Thomas Dausgaard, and broadcast on BBC Radio 3 & BBC iPlayer.
