About
Education: After studying musicology at the Universities of Louvain and Berlin, Jan Vandenhouwe began his career as a music and opera critic in the Belgian newspaper "De Standaard".
Dramaturgy: from 2005 to 2008, he was playwright and program manager of the Bastille Amphitheater at the Paris Opera, working in close collaboration with director Gerard Mortier. From 2009 to 2011, he was responsible for the concert programming of the Concertgebouw in Bruges, and since then has worked as an independent musical playwright in many institutions, such as the Teatro Real de Madrid, Ensemble InterContemporain and Klarafestival Brussels.
Collaborations: he collaborates with the choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker - Così fan tutte (Mozart) in Paris, Mitten wir im Leben sind / Bach6Cellosuiten (Bach and Kurtág) at the Ruhrtriennale - and the directors Alain Platel - Choirs in Madrid, Nicht schlafen at the Ruhrtriennale -, Ivo van Hove - Brokeback Mountain (Wuorinen) in Madrid, Salomé (R. Strauss) in Amsterdam, Boris Godounov (Mussorgsky) in Paris - and Johan Simons - Fidelio (Beethoven) in Paris, Boris Godounov in Madrid , The Ring of Nibelung (Wagner) and Alceste (Gluck) at the Ruhrtriennale.
Recently: from 2015 to 2017, he was playwright in chief of the Ruhrtriennale.
Coming soon: from July 2019, he will be artistic director of the Flanders Opera (Antwerp and Ghent).
