Holger Schinköthe was born in Solingen and studied after graduating from high school with Helman Jung at the Music Academy in Detmold and Daniele Damiano at the Orchestra Academy of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra.
He was a fellow of the Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes and the Herbert von Karajan Foundation. He won 1st prizes at the national competition Jugend musiziert, at the German University Competition u.a. and was an early member of the Federal Youth Orchestra and the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra. In 1991 he became solo bassoonist in the orchestra of the Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden. Since 1992 he is solo bassoonist of the Bavarian State Orchestra. In 2004 he was appointed Bavarian chamber virtuoso. He has played concerts and productions as a solo bassoonist with the Berliner Philharmoniker, with the radio orchestras of the NDR Hamburg, the Bayerischer Rundfunk, the Hessischer Rundfunk and the SWR Stuttgart, with the Munich Philharmonic and many other renowned orchestras. He has repeatedly performed in Italy with the Radio Symphony Orchestra of RAI Turin, the Milan Scala Orchestra and the Accademia Santa Cecilia in Rome. In spring 2011, he invited Zubin Mehta to perform as a solo bassoonist with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra for several weeks with concerts in Israel and the US.
