Hayato Sumino was born on July 14, 1995. He is a Japanese pianist and composer celebrated for his interpretations of Frédéric Chopin's works.
A gifted musician, Sumino took up the piano at just three years old. His performances quickly drew large, enthusiastic crowds in his native Tokyo. Besides music, he also had a keen interest in science and technology. After high school, Sumino enrolled at the University of Tokyo, where he graduated with honors from the School of Information Science and Engineering in March 2020, receiving the prestigious presidential award.
He then traveled to France to study music information processing and artificial intelligence at the French Institute of Acoustic Music (IRCAM)
Being fond of all directions in music, Sumino actively performs on the jazz scene, often playing in Blue Note Tokyo, which is considered one of the most influential jazz clubs in the world. Last April, Sumino was invited to perform at the Japanese Jazz Auditorium Online 2021, where he played Rhapsody in Blue. Once again, he brilliantly performed a composition by George Gershwin, demonstrating a virtuoso keyboard playing that made his interpretation unforgettable. He is also a member of the avant-garde urban soul band Penthouse.
But Sumino wanted to test his classical virtuoso skills, so he decided to take part in numerous music competitions. As a result, he has received numerous prestigious awards, including first prize at the National Piano Teachers Competition in Japan (PTNA) and a gold medal at the Chopin International Piano Competition in Asia.
Sumino always finds time to share his skills and knowledge with hundreds of thousands of music lovers and fans, giving lectures all over Japan and regularly streaming his performances live on YouTube. Undoubtedly, he introduces the younger generation to classical music.
