About

Belgian tenor Guy de Mey made his Royal Opera debut in 2008 as Linfea (La Calisto) and has since sung Guillot de Morfontaine (Manon) and Don Basilio (Le nozze di Figaro) for The Royal Opera.

De Mey was born in Belgium and studied with Erna Spoorenberg, Peter Pears and Eric Tappy. His career was launched in 1975 when he won the Belgian National Pro Civitate competition, and he has since appeared around the world for such companies as La Scala, Milan, Paris Opéra and Opéra national du Rhin. Career highlights include roles in Die Zauberflöte and Orfeo under Roger Norrington for the BBC Proms, in Lully’s Atys under William Christie for Paris Opéra and in works by Monteverdi and Cavalli for New Israeli Opera. In opera, he has largely specialized in character tenor roles, including Dancing Master (Ariadne auf Naxos), Monsieur Triquet (Eugene Onegin), Frick (La Vie parisienne) and Hauk-Šendorf (The Makropulos Case). De Mey is also a well-known Lieder singer, and has appeared in recital at the Flanders Festival and elsewhere across Europe and the USA.

He has made more than fifty recordings with renowned conductors including John Eliot Gardiner, René Jacobs and Ton Koopman, with whom he took part in a project to record the complete vocal works of J.S. Bach. Since 1996 he has taught at the Royal Flemish Conservatory in Antwerp.
