De Mey was born in Belgium and studied with Erna Spoorenberg, Peter Pears and Eric Tappy. De Mey is also a well-known Lieder singer, and has appeared in recital at the Flanders Festival and elsewhere across Europe and the USA.

He has made more than fifty recordings with renowned conductors including John Eliot Gardiner, René Jacobs and Ton Koopman, with whom he took part in a project to record the complete vocal works of J.S. Bach. Since 1996 he has taught at the Royal Flemish Conservatory in Antwerp.
