Guillaume VARUPENNE was born on November 13, 1985 in Roubaix; Passionate about music, he started bass saxhorn with Christian LELEU, and very early on, he joined the Conservatoire de Lille in the class of Gabriel CAPET. In 1998, he won the 7th competition for young performers of Wattrelos and he obtained, in June 1999, a 1st prize for chamber music and bass saxhorn. The following year he completes his studies in Lille by obtaining a price of improvement.
In September 2000, at the age of 14, he joined the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et Danse (CNSMD) of Lyon (class of Messrs Mel CULBERTSON, Arnaud BOUKHITINE, Ivan MILHIET). In November 2002, he won a first prize at the Luxembourg International Euphonium Competition and, in 2003, was a semi-finalist at the Philip Jones International Euphonium Competition at age 17; the following year, he finished his studies at the CNSMD with all honors (DNESM).
In parallel with his studies of tenor tuba, he studied the tenor trombone for two years with Messrs. Bernard METZ and Christian BOGAERT (2003-2004) and, after one year of studying Bass Trombone with Laurent FOUQUERAY (2005), he entered Bass Trombone Solo. at the Opéra National Orchestra of PARIS in June 2006 at the age of 20 years. In November 2010, he won the SPEDIDAM Generation Award. Since September 2011 he has been assistant professor at CNSM in Paris.
