About

Ever since its founding, shortly after the Second World War, the Groot Omroepkoor has been the only choir in the Netherlands that professionally performs the large choir symphonic repertoire. Klaas Stok has been the choir leader of the Groot Omroepkoor since 2015, Peter Dijkstra first guest conductor since 2018.

The choir is closely linked to the Dutch Public Broadcasting and sings frequently in the broadcasting series: the NTR ZaterdagMatinee and Het Zondagochtend Concert in Het Concertgebouw, and the AVROTROS Vrijdagconcert in TivoliVredenburg. The repertoire in this series revolves around contemporary music (with premieres by, among others, Henze, MacMillan and Adams and commissioned works by Dutch composers such as Wagemans, Visman and Vleggaar), older works from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and opera.

The Groot Omroepkoor has built up a versatile discography, many of which were internationally acclaimed, such as the recording of James MacMillan's Sun-Dogs for choir a cappella. In 2017 the choir won the Concertgebouw Prize together with the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra.

There has been a long and fruitful collaboration with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. After a performance of Mahler's Second Symphony, Mariss Jansons - then chief conductor of the orchestra - praised "the exceptionally high level of this choir." Jansons also led the last joint performances with the Concertgebouw Orchestra in October 2018, with the Brittens War Requiem program.
