A life on the tips. Giulia Schembri, 29, cut a prestigious milestone just this year: 10 years in the ballet of the Alla Scala theater in Milan. At four and a half years - following in the footsteps of his older sister Selina - he began to take his first steps at Freebody, followed by Roberta Tricerri. At 11, followed in the meantime, also by Aiscia Zanni, the first warning sign. «I attended an audition at the Alla Scala theater, it went very well and they would have kept me there already in Milan. But I was a child, I could not stand the distance from home, and in the end I chose to attend secondary school in Vercelli ».
The stages of a dream
At 14, the big step with the choice of leaving home security to attend the temple of dance par excellence. For five years Giulia studies (to get her diploma) and simultaneously dances. Rigor, discipline and hard training: a natural selection that keeps only the most temperate characters at the gala. At the age of 19, as soon as she officially entered the ballet company, she immediately had the chance to participate in a prestigious tour in China. From then on it will be an escalation of successes.
In 2006, the Alla Scala theater's dance troupe comprised around 110-120 people, today the number has narrowed a lot. "Mine is a special job, no denying it. I feel lucky and privileged: I really do what I love and for which I have invested a lot of time. I have no regrets. I realize that at the age of 29 the "down" phase of the career is starting. By law we must retire at 45: it is a goal that is still far away so I don't think about it that much. Surely my body is no longer what it was 10 years ago, dancing at our levels is extremely tiring ».
The dancer from Vercelli will now enjoy a few days of rest, but from August 16th he will return to work. «We will prepare three ballets (Giselle, Cello Suite and Don Chisciotte) to take on tour at the end of summer: we will stay three weeks in China and one in Tokyo. Following this, a Milanese period is planned to then start again in autumn with the Swan Lake scheduled in Paris ».
In this decade, Giulia Schembri has been able to work with the world dance icons: from our Roberto Bolle to Alessandra Ferri, to the choreographers Jiri Kylian, William Forsythe and Laurent Hilaire to name a few. Grinding thousands of kilometers to perform in theaters around the world, from Mexico to Japan: Paris, London, Belgrade, Athens and Moscow, which, he assures, "gave me a crazy charge of adrenaline for majesty".
