Giovanni Gnocchi is one of the brightest young cellists on the international scene.
After having debuted in 2001 as a soloist with Yo-Yo Ma, he performed as a soloist at the Hong Kong Arts Festival, at the Mozarteum Salzburg, the Wiener Konzerthaus, the Essen Philharmonie, Rosengarten, Manheim, at the Kurhaus Wiesbaden, Lisinki Hall in Zagreb, etc, with conductors such as Gustavo Dudamel, Christopher Hogwood, Carlo Rizzi, Pavel Despalj, Daniele Giorgi, Stefano Pagliani.
In 2002, he won the position of first solo cellist of the Camerata Salzburg, with whom he played for eight consecutive years, also as a soloist and chamber musician in many of the major seasons and halls all over the world: the Musikverein in Vienna, Lincoln Center in New York, the Tanglewood Music Festival, the Kennedy Center in Washington, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Parco della Musica of Rome, Symphony Hall Birmingham, the Menhuin Festival Gstaad, the Semper Oper Dresden, working in close collaboration with musicians including Leonidas Kavakos, Murray Perahia, Gil Shaham, Franz Welser-Moest, Sir Roger Norrington
During the 2011-2012 season he played the role of Guest Principal Cellist with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of London, playing under the baton of Daniele Gatti, after having already worked as first cello guest in orchestras such as the Philharmonia Orchestra of London, Orchestra Mozart with Claudio Abbado, Münchner Philharmoniker, Mahler Chamber Orchestra with Daniel Harding and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra with Vladimir Ashkenazy, Bamberger Symphoniker with Jonathan Nott, and as Co-Principal Cellist in the London Symphony Orchestra with Valery Gergiev. Since 2008 he has been a permanent member of the Lucerne Festival Orchestra, performing frequently in chamber ensembles with the prestigious soloists who make up the orchestra.
Founder of the Cremona Quartet in 2000 and the David Trio in 2003, with these formations has won numerous awards in the major international chamber competitions in Europe and the USA. As a chamber musician he has performed at major european festivals, with partners such as Leonidas Kavakos, Andrea Lucchesini, Marco Rizzi, Aleksander Madzar, the Mahler Chamber Soloists, Diemut Poppen, Barbara Bonney, Christine Schäfer, Thomas Riebl, Howard Shelley, Alexander Lonquich, Lukas Hagen, Pierre Amoyal, Wolfram Christ, Jens-Peter Maintz, Pavel Gililov, Jennifer Stumm, Esther Hoppe, Cristian Budu, Alessio Bax.
Giovanni Gnocchi studied with Rocco Filippini and Mario Brunello and graduated from the Conservatory of Rovigo with honors under the guidance of Luca Simoncini. He completed his studies by attending long classes with Enrico Bronzi, and for 2 years those of Clemens Hagen, and at the same time the master classes of H. Schiff, S. Isserlis, and A. Meneses, D. Geringas, N. Gutman, G. Hoffman, and F. Helmerson, P. Muller, F. Rados, F. Rossi, P. Farulli, A. Nannoni, Trio di Trieste, M. Jones, H. Beyerle, G. Takacs-Nagy, Trio Altenberg Wien.
