Genevieve has always had an immense love for Theatre. Fond memories of seeing The Sound of Music, Mamma Mia and Annie as a child sparked keen interest. She began singing lessons at the age of 12 after being inspired in her first lead role in her Grade 6 Musical, Once Upon a Time.
Genevieve performed diligently throughout her secondary Education at St. Leonard’s College. Roles included Dot in Honk, Ensemble in Seussical, Elizabeth in the Crucible, The Snake in Children of Eden and Beatrice in Much Ado About Nothing. She did her Grade five and Six Australian Music Examination Board’s (AMEB) singing exams and received Honours in both. One of Genevieve’s greatest loves at school was choral singing. As well as the general choir she was additionally part of the auditioned choir and was Choir Captain for her final year.
Chemistry and Mathematics were Genevieve’s best subjects out of school, owing to this she pursued an undergraduate degree in Behavioural Neuroscience at Monash University where she majored in both Behavioural Neuroscience and Physiology. Genevieve loved her studies of the brain however a longing passion for performing was itching to be satisfied. During her undergraduate degree she performed in several amateur dramatic productions, playing Mimi in RENT, Judas in Godspell, The Inspector in Dogg’s Hamlet Cahoot’s Macbeth and Ethel in Footloose as well as vocal directing the same production. From February to May 2013 Genevieve performed in the World Amateur Premier of Phantom of the Opera with the Cheltenham Light Opera Company (CLOC.) During her summer breaks she would travel to Sydney to participate in short courses at the National Insitute of Dramatic Art (NIDA). Studying Acting, Musical Theatre and Body Language gave Genevieve great experience working on theatre and television techniques with industry professionals. She also completed a Shakespeare intensive weekend at the Eagle’s Nest Theatre in Brunswick under the direction of Colin Reese David.
Genevieve is a true theatre buff. A member of the Melbourne Theatre Company and the National Theatre in London, a very regular West End and fringe theatre goer, even taking a trip to New York in early 2013 to educate herself on Broadway.
After completing her degree in June 2013, Genevieve travelled to London in August 2013 to begin her training at the London School of Musical Theatre (LSMT). This one year intensive vocational training appealed to her, having just completed a three year degree, she was eager to immerse herself in full time practical performance building course that pitched itself as “The Professional’s Training”. Genevieve thrived at LSMT, performing several lead roles throughout the year and making the most of every opportunity. She was a finalist in the Charles Miller Song Competition judged by Charles Miller, Cynthia Erivo and Julie Atherton. Her shining moment was being cast as the title role in the College’s Production of Violet, directed by Matt Ryan and Musically Directed by Jim Henson, at the Bridewell Theatre.
Five weeks after graduating Genevieve was cast in her professional debut as Johanna in Sweeney Todd at the Twickenham Theatre, performing alongside a West End cast including sensations David Bedella and Sarah Ingram. This production won Best Off-West End Musical at the What’s on Stage Awards held at the Prince of Wales Theatre in the West End. Genevieve and the cast performed at the event, singing a medley of musical numbers from the show. It was also nominated for Best Revival of a Musical but unfortunately lost to a well-deserved Miss Saigon.
Later in 2015 Genevieve was part of a workshop for a New Musical in London. Doll, book and lyrics by Jari Laakso and music by Joe Louis Robinson, is a musical fusion of the plays Miss Julie by August Strindberg and A Doll’s House by Henrik Ibsen. This innovative piece was workshopped and excerpts were performed at Goldsmith’s University.
Genevieve has just recently returned to Australia. She is very much looking forward to getting involved in the industry here in Melbourne, hoping to spread her wings and keep exploring all of the wonderful avenues of performing, both at home and internationally.
