Frédéric Tardy was born in Clermont-Ferrand, France, where he studied oboe in the class of Alain Blanc-Brude.

At the age of 16, he was admitted to the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Lyon (class of J.-C. Gayot and Guy Laroche) and received a first prize in 1990. In 1999 he was awarded the Special Prize of the International Competition of the Isle of Wight and the second prize of the international competition of the IDRS Chicago in the USA. Since January 2018 Frédéric Tardy is the solo oboist of the Bavarian State Orchestra conducted by Kirill Petrenko. His professional career began at the Orchester National du Capitole in Toulouse under the musical direction of Michel Plasson, before becoming solo oboist at the Opéra National de Lyon in 1993 (musical directors: K. Nagano, I. Fischer, K. Ono).
He regularly appeared as a solo oboist with the WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne, the Toscanini Foundation in Parma and finally the Orchester Philharmonique de Radio France. In 2017 he released his first CD recording with the trio "Inspiration".
From September 1998 to June 2018 he was a lecturer at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse in Paris. From 2015 to 2016, he also taught at CRR Lyon. Frédéric Tardy plays a M2 Oboe by Marigaux and the reeds "du roseaux chantant".
