Born in Hamburg, Frauke Schernau completed her stage and costume design studies in Vienna with Erich Wonder and in Munich with Eckehard Grübler.
For seven years she worked as an assistant with the stage and costume designer Jürgen Rose. From 1987 to 1990 she was head of the costume department at the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels. Various Work designed for the ZDF and was responsible for the costume image of the European premiere of "Marie Antoinette – The Musical". Since 1991 she has been the costume director of the Semperoper. Here she worked as a costume designer with Peter Konwitschny, Willy Decker and Wolfgang Gussmann, Harry Kupfer and Annette Jahn. A special collaboration at and outside the Semperoper connects her with Vera Nemirova, with whom she worked at the Semperoper 2006 "Otello "and in 2011" Idomeneo " in Mainz. In 2012 "La clemenza di Tito" followed at the Lucerne Festival. Last season, together with Hofesh Shechter, she designed the costumes for his world premiere "Corpse de Ballet". Her work can also be experienced in ballet productions in the current season, such as "Labyrinth" and "Alice – a journey into Wonderland".
