A graduate in musicology at the Sorbonne, François Lis studied at the National Conservatory of Music in Paris and perfected his technique at the Salzburg Mozarteum and the Merola Program at the San Francisco Opera. In 2005, he was named in the category Revelations at the Victoires de la Musique Classique. He began his career in the baroque repertoire and was quickly invited to the international opera stages (Les Boréades in Lyon with Les Musiciens du Louvre Grenoble).
With time, his repertoire expands and he performs roles such as Alidoro de La Cenerentola at La Monnaie in Brussels, Narbal des Troyens at the Opéra du Rhin, Zuniga de Carmen at the Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse and the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, Escamillo at the Skopje Festival, Asdrubale of La Pietra del Paragone at the Théâtre du Châtelet, the title role of Don Giovanni with Opera Fuoco, Figaro of Le Nozze di Figaro with William Christie at the Opéra de Lyon, then at the Dublin Opera, Pluto and Jupiter by Hippolyte and Aricie at the Capitole de Toulouse, Jupiter de Platée at the Opéra National du Rhin and the Opéra National de Paris, Teucer de Dardanus in Lille, the Commander of Don Giovanni at the Theater Champs-Elysees, Marcel des Huguenots at La Monnaie. He has appeared in several productions of the Paris Opera including La Cenerentola (Alidoro), Carmen (Zuniga), King Arthus (Allan, under the direction of Philippe Jordan), Alceste (Oracle). During the 2012/2013 season, he took part in the creation of Philippe Fénelon JJR Citizen of Geneva at the Grand Théâtre de Genève and made his debut at the Glyndebourne Festival in Hippolyte et Aricie.
In the summer of 2012, he made his Los Angeles Hollywood Bowl debut in Carmen under the direction of Gustavo Dudamel; it is in the role of Zuniga and with this leader that he then makes his debut in Caracas and La Scala in Milan. François Lis also performs in concert.
In 2013, he sang L'Enfance du Christ at the Saint-Denis Festival under the direction of James Conlon.
He has recently performed Don Alvaro and Huascar (Les Indes galantes) at the Munich Festival, the King (Ariodante) at the Canadian Opera Company in Toronto, Campra's Venetian Festivities at the Brooklyn Academy of Music and at the Capitol Theater, Schlémil ( Les Contes d'Hoffmann) at the Opéra national de Paris and at the Opéra national d'Amsterdam, Basilio (The Barber of Seville) at the Opéra national de Bordeaux.
