Brazilian-born brothers Sérgio and Odair Assad celebrate six decades together in Six Decades on Six Strings – an anniversary concert by the Latin Grammy-winning guitar duo.
The brothers began playing together at an early age, and their international career took off with a major prize at the 1979 Young Artists Competition in Bratislava. Their album Sérgio and Odair Assad Play Piazzolla won the 2002 Latin Grammy for Best Tango Album, and Sérgio Assad’s Tahhiyya li ossoulina – also on this programme – won the 2008 Latin Grammy for Best Classical Contemporary Composition. They recorded Obrigado Brazil with Yo-Yo Ma, and composers from Astor Piazzolla to Terry Riley and Radamés Gnattali have written for them.
This anniversary programme celebrates the music of Brazil and Latin America – Piazzolla’s tango, Villa-Lobos’s Alma brasileira, Gismonti’s playful Baião malandro and Sérgio Assad’s own One Week in Rio, a tour of the city in seven musical days.
