With hits from over 5 decades, the Melk Summer Games, directed by Andy Hallwaxx, present a comedic show and fast-paced parody of antiquity, in which rock sounds, cozy songs and hit parade toppers paired with cheeky satire and inspiring humor whirl around your eyes and ears. In 2023, the Festival will feature two theatrical performances - "Cassandra" and "One Vision".
According to legend, the god Apollo desired the Trojan king's daughter Cassandra so much that he gave her the gift of prophecy. However, when she rejected his attempts at seduction, he put a curse on her: Nobody should believe her. She is considered a tragic heroine who always foresaw the disaster, but was never heard. "Cassandra" is the modern narration of an ancient myth that challenges our own patterns of behavior and ways of thinking.
"One Vision" - When Greek gods end up in a washed-up Las Vegas cut, when the Trojan horse tap-dances as a crazy horse in a variety show, when cryptic prophecies cause confusion and mix-ups, then the best entertainment is guaranteed.
About the Summer Games Melk
Founded in 1961, the Melk Summer Games are one of the most traditional theater festivals in Austria and boast the longest uninterrupted series of plays in Lower Austria.
In the beginning, the venue was in front of the garden pavilion of Melk Abbey - the first play, by the way, was William Shakespeare's "What You Want" - since 2000 the Wachau Arena Melk has offered its visitors an incomparable backdrop. For several years, the Melk Summer Games have followed a coherent thematic orientation, the pieces are clearly related to the "genius loci", the intellectual climate of the venue. The performances are given a unique setting of a special kind by the unique backdrop of the Melk Abbey, a world heritage site, in the background of the stage.
Since 2010, the highly literary material adaptations have been supplemented by the popular music revue, and since 2017 the format of the music revue for children has also been on the schedule.
