In August and September, the Bolzano Festival Bozen turns the South Tyrolean capital into a vibrant venue for classical music in all its diversity. Top-class international performers and the fresh vitality and spontaneity of a new generation of highly talented young instrumentalists are the recipe for success of this festival, which has been bringing together the outstanding summer music events for 10 years under the patronage of the Bolzano municipality.

About the Bolzano Festival Bozen

Bolzano Festival Bozen is a European classical music festival of unique and distinctive character that serves as a single platform for four partners: the Antiqua Festival of Early Music, two orchestras-in-residence, the Ferruccio Busoni International Piano Competition, and the Gustav Mahler Academy. Here, great stars meet up with young, fresh talents!

Due to its geographical location and particular history, Bolzano, situated in the heart of Europe surrounded by the splendour of the UNESCO Heritage protected Dolomite mountains, has always been a melting pot. From this unique mix of Austrian-German, Italian and Ladin culture the city draws its very own, distinct flavour. It seems to be no coincidence that the place was twice picked for musical initiative of highest ambitions that aimed both at artistic excellence and at representing the spirit and values of a united, peaceful Europe. It is here that in 1949 an illustrious group of outstanding artists and educators endorsed the foundation of Busoni Piano Competition, pursuing and honouring the spirit of the great pianist, composer and universal intellectual Ferruccio Busoni. Many outstanding artists have emerged from the competition, among them Alfred Brendel, Martha Argerich, Jörg Demus, Louis Lortie and Garrick Ohlsson, to name just a few.

Less than 3 decades later, Bolzano's qualities were again noted by one of the great Maestros of the 20th century - the late Claudio Abbado. He chose the city as a summer residence for two of his most precious educational initiatives: Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester and European Union Youth Orchestra. Thousands of outstanding young musicians have spent a substantial amount of their summers here, rehearsing for their tours to the continent's most important festivals, but also playing concerts to the city's own, enthusiastic and loyal audience. Later, the range of activities supporting the education of the continent's most promising young musicians was completed by Gustav Mahler Academy.

Bolzano has been thoughtfully taking care of this precious heritage. Nearly two decades ago, the city merged all this institutions to the platform of Bolzano Festival Bozen. A platform for classical music, uniting not only the youth orchestras and the excellence of the piano competition, but also Antiqua, the festival for Early Music, one of the oldest and most renowned of its kind in Italy. Under the guidance of eminent artists, the city has become a hub for extraordinarily gifted musicians.
