Europa Galante was founded in 1990 by its musical director and internationally acclaimed violinist Fabio Biondi, and quickly established itself as the foremost Italian period instrument ensemble, breathing new life into baroque and classical repertoire.
The ensemble specialised initially in the Italian composers of the 17th and 18th centuries and, following the release of its first record dedicated to Vivaldi concertos, the ensemble has received worldwide recognition, consistently gaining the highest level of critical acclaim including the including the Diapason d’Or de l’Année and Choc de Musique. Europa Galante now performs a variety of well-known repertoire and unearths hidden gems from Handel opera to Bach orchestral suites, Rossini opera to the chamber music of Boccherini.
Europa Galante has has toured widely throughout the world in many of the world’s major concert halls and theatres including Teatro alla Scala Milan, Rome’s Accademia di Santa Cecilia, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Wiener Musikverein, New York’s Lincoln Center, Tokyo’s Suntory Hall and the Sydney Opera House.
Highlights of the current season include a Monteverdi and Italian programme with Ian Bostridge at the Berlin Pierre Boulez Saal, Wiener Konzerthaus and Auditorio Nacional de Música Madrid, where Biondi is Artist in Residence on 2019; Monteverdi Ulisse in Patria at the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg; and an Italian tour of Bach’s orchestral suites including at the beautiful Teatro della Pergola in Florence.
In August 2018, a special celebrated the 10th anniversary of Stanislaw Moniuszko with a performance of his opera Halka at the International Chopin Festival; Europa Galante return this year for Moniuszko’s Opera Flis and Verdi’s Il Corsaro, continuing the ensemble journey through historically informed performance of bel canto opera – previous productions included Bellini’s Norma and Rossini’s La Cenerentola.
The latest additions to their extraordinary discography on Warner Classics, Virgin and Glossa include
Vivaldi’s ‘Farewell concertos’ (Diapason d’Or), and ‘Boemia Concertos’ (Star Recording of The Strad),
their acclaimed recording of Bellini Capuleti e Montecchi, and Verdi Macbeth (Preis der Deutsche Schallplattenkritik), following Vivaldi operas such as Bazajet, Oracolo in Messenia and Ercole sul Termodonte, released on Warner Classics with Joyce DiDonato, Diana Damrau, Philippe Jaroussky, Vivica Genaux and Rolando Villazón).
Europa Galante is the resident orchestra of Fondazione Teatro Due in Parma.
