Australian director Elijah Moshinsky made his Royal Opera debut in the 1974-5 Season directing Peter Grimes. He has returned to the Company to direct The Trojans at Carthage, Lohengrin, The Rake’s Progress, Macbeth, Samson et Dalila, Tannhäuser, Samson, Otello, Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Attila, Simon Boccanegra, Stiffelio, Aida, I masnadieri and Il trovatore. He also directed Cavalleria rusticana/Pagliacci with Welsh National Opera and La forza del destino with the Kirov Opera at the Royal Opera House. In the 2018/19 Season The Royal Opera revives Moshinsky’s Simon Boccanegra.
Moshinsky grew up in Melbourne and studied at the University of Melbourne and St Antony’s College in Oxford. He was appointed a staff producer for The Royal Opera while still a student. Along with his work for The Royal Opera, he has directed many productions for English National Opera (including the British premiere of Ligeti’s Le Grand Macabre) and Welsh National Opera, and also directed for La Scala, Milan, the Metropolitan Opera, New York, Vienna State Opera, Grand Théâtre de Genève, the Mariinsky Theatre, St Petersburg, Los Angeles Opera, the NCPA Beijing and Korean National Opera, among others. He won Olivier awards for his Royal Opera productions of Lohengrin, Stiffelio and The Rake’s Progress.
In theatre, Moshinsky has directed for companies including the National Theatre, the Royal Shakespeare Company (Nigel Williams’s adaptation of Lord of the Flies) and in the West End. He directed William Nicholson’s play Shadowlands in New York (1990-1). He has directed many Shakespeare plays for BBC television, Tippett’s The Midsummer Marriage for Channel Four, and the documentaries Mozart in Turkey and Divas in the Arena for the BBC.
