About

The Düsseldorfer Symphoniker are the concert orchestra of the state capital Düsseldorf and, along with the Duisburg Philharmonic, are one of two orchestras of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein.

Düsseldorf orchestral culture has been traceable for almost 400 years. Since 1614 residence city, Düsseldorf developed into a center of baroque musical life with a court orchestra famous far beyond the borders, which musicians like Georg Friedrich Handel and Arcangelo Corelli paid visits. After the dissolution of the Düsseldorf court from 1720 in Mannheim, the members of the court music formed the trunk for the Mannheim orchestra, which was to become the cradle of modern orchestral sound.

In Düsseldorf music maintenance remained in the hands of the citizens. In May 1818, the Municipal Music Association was formed as part of the 1st Lower Rhine Music Festival. Friedrich August Burgmüller was hired as the first “municipal music director”, and his successors included Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and Robert Schumann. In 1864, 34 musicians were officially taken into the service of the city. Today the Düsseldorfer Symphoniker have 130 permanent positions, 117 of which are currently filled. The orchestra represents the field of symphonic music for the state capital Düsseldorf.

On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra, the Great Hall of the Tonhalle Düsseldorf was renamed the Mendelssohn Hall on February 7, 2014 as part of a concert ceremony to honor its former music director.
