As a little girl of six I was fascinated by the shiny saxophones at the brass band in the village. After the annual coffee concert in the village hall, I immediately wanted to take saxophone lessons myself. My parents persuaded me to take recorder lessons for two more years, but the impressive image of the saxophone with all these valves no longer disappeared from my retina.
Twenty years later, I particularly prefer old saxophones that barely shine. I have had a soprano saxophone from 1972 and an alto from 1985 for some time. These old instruments have a warm and characteristic sound that you can hardly find with instruments that have just come from the factory.
During my study of classical saxophone at the Conservatory of Amsterdam I played a lot of soprano and alto saxophone. To expand my musical possibilities and to get the chance to play tenor saxophone parts in an orchestra, I have applied to Stichting Eigen Muziekinstrument for the purchase of my own tenor saxophone.
I have found a beautiful tenor saxophone from 1975. It is a very vocal instrument on which I can discover all kinds of new sound possibilities. In addition to the saxophone, I was able to purchase a nice suitcase from the donation.
I am extremely grateful to SEM and the funds that have contributed and I hope that after me SEM can help many saxophonists and other musicians to purchase an instrument.
