Dietrich von Kaltenborn was born in Bonn. He studied violoncello at the conservatories in Leipzig and Munich.
First, he was a member of the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra and the Duisburg Symphony Orchestra, since 2000 he is a member of the cello group of the Bavarian State Orchestra.
