Born in Berlin, Derek Gimpel studied art and musicology before working as an assistant director and evening director at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden Berlin from 1996 to 2001. Since 1989, he has been associated with Harry Kupfer. In April 2017 his production of Verdi's "Don Carlo" premiered at the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb. In 2014 he staged Harrison Birtwistles "Punch and Judy"in the workshop of the State Opera at the Schiller Theater. Derek Gimpel directed music theatre works by composers such as Monteverdi, Handel, Mozart and Offenbach to Gérard Grisey and Alexander Goehr, collaborating with early music Ensembles such as the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, as well as with contemporary music ensembles such as the Klangforum Wien. As a Translator, a German version of Donizetti's "Le convenienze ed inconvenienze teatrali", which was premiered with the Dresden Philharmonic and Michael Sanderling, developed, etc. He also works with young singers in courses and Workshops at the University of the Arts Berlin, Tokyo and the Royal College of Music in London.
