The Belgian tenor Denzil Delaere graduated with highest honors in 2008 from the School of Art of Ghent, where he was taught piano and the art of singing with Philippe Wesemael and Sabine Haenebalcke. Subsequently he was admitted at the Royal Conservatory of Ghent where he completed his vocal education with Marcos Pujol and Gidon Saks. He graduated from the Conservatory with Master degree in 2013. Eventually he combined two postgraduates, the first at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel, the other at the International Opera Academy (IOA) of Ghent.
NEWS
The season 2019/2020 will take him to the Grand Théâtre de Genève, where he will join the solists ensemble for a couple of months. He will appear as Messaggero in Verdi's Aïda, Pedrillo in Entführung aus dem Serail and Frère Elie in Messiaen's Saint-François d'Assise and take part in several concerts and smaller productions. The more he will sing his first Hans in Smetana's The Bartered Bride (Dutch version "Bruid te koop" at Nederlandse Reisopera).
RECENT ENGAGEMENTS
included Janek in Janacek's The Makropoulos Affair, at the Janacek Festival in Brno, Prince Arjuna in Satyagraha by Philip Glass and the solo tenor of the quartet - a main character - in the world premiere of Les Bienveillantes by Hèctor Parra, a work commissioned by the Flanders Opera).
Denzil Delaere made successfully his debut at Concertgebouw Amsterdam, as Pietro in Die Gezeichneten (Franz Schecker), with the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra led by Markus Stenz (Zaterdag-Matinee). With the latter orchestra, but under the baton of Stanislav Kochanovsky, he also appeared in Sulamith a cantata by P.H. van Gilse (Utrecht, Vredenburg, 28 sept. 2018).
CAREER OVERVIEW
it all started at the Opera House of Luzern (CH), where was engaged throughout the season (2016/2017) to sing Die Zauberflöte (Tamino), Rigoletto (Borsa) and the tenor solo parts in Prometeo (Luigi Nono) and the Vespro della beata Virgine (Claudio Monteverdi).
Subsequently he joined the Flanders Opera soloists ensemble, where he appeared as Schwertrichter (Das Wunder der Heliane, Korngold), Carlos and Balbuena (Le Duc d’Albe), Bardolfo (Falstaff, directed by Christoph Waltz), Knappe (Parsifal) and 1st Croupier & Hunchback Gambler (The Gambler). The more, the Opera house of Luzern reinvited him for a first role : Roberto in Maria Stuarda.
Guest engagements include invitations by the Opera House of Montpellier as Capitaine Ricardo in Chérubin (Massenet), the Royal Opera House of Wallonie/Liège as Normanno in Lucia di Lammermoor and Gervais in Manon by Auber. The Oberammergau-Festival invited him to sing Steuermann in Fliegende Holländer.
Denzil Delaere's opera repertoire also includes : The prologue (Turn of the Screw), Toby (The Medium), Arnalta (L'incoronazione di Poppea), Ferrando (Cosi fan tutte), Jolicoeur (La Fourchette) and the title role in Mozart's Mitridate, Rè di Ponto...
Other conductors he has performed with are a.o. : Paolo Arrivabeni, Florian Heyerick, Dmitri Jurowski, Andrew Greenwood, Korneel Bernolet, Clemens Heil, Gabriel Venzago, Olof Boma, Stefan Klingele, Jean-Marie Zeitouni, Tomas Netopil, Jesus Lopez-Cobos, Alexander Joel and Cornelius Meister.
In a constantly growing concert activity Denzil Delaere participated as a soloist in major works by J.S. Bach (Magnificat, Christmas-Oratorio, Kaffeekantate, Missa Brevis in A major, Matthew Passion), G.F. Haendel (Messiah), J. Haydn (Creation) and Mozart (Coronation Mass and Requiem) ...with different ensembles and orchestras.
Equally at home in the "Lied" repertoire he has performed numerous recitals with selected songs by Schubert, Brahms, Beethoven, Fauré, Poulenc, Rachmaninov. Whilst he was trained at Royal Conservatory of Ghent Denzil Delaere has developed a strong connection to contemporary music. Besides his participation in the world première of Acubens (main role), he has performed major works by Olivier Messiaen, Alban Berg, Wolfgang Rihm, Wim Hendrickx and John Cage.
