About

Italian director Daniele Abbado made his Royal Opera debut in 2013 directing Nabucco.

Abbado studied philosophy at the University of Padua and theatre at the Scuola d’Arte drammatica at the Piccolo Teatro, Milan, and began his directing career in 1988. Productions include Pélleas et Melisande (Opera di Firenze), Nabucco (Liceu, Barcelona), Rigoletto (La Fenice, Venice), Don Carlo (Vienna State Opera), Pelléas et Mélisande (Maggio Musicale, Florence), Lohengrin (Bilbao), Norma (Macerata), The Rape of Lucretia (Maggio Musicale, Reggio Emilia, Ravenna, Teatro Real, Madrid), Die Zauberflöte (Reggio Emilia, conducted by his father Claudio), Ermione (Rossini Opera Festival, Pesaro), Tosca (Nishinomiya, Japan, and Teatro Regio, Turin), La Cenerentolaand Madama Butterfly (Bari), A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Bari and Reggio Emilia), Attila (Teatro Comunale di Bologna), Falstaff (Cagliari) and Oberon (Théâtre du Capitole de Toulouse). He has directed several productions of Mozart’s Da Ponte operas, including Così fan tutte and Le nozze di Figaro in Cagliari.

Abbado has a keen interest in contemporary music, and has directed works including Battistelli’s Experimentum Mundi (Lucerne and Salzburg festivals), Battistelli’s Miracolo a Milano (Reggio Emilia and Rome), Berio’s Passaggio and Laborintus II (Genoa), Henze’s Pollicino (Rome) and Dallapiccola’s Il prigioniero and Volo di notte (Maggio Musicale, Florence). He has also directed various large-scale projects, semi-staged operas and plays using video projections. From 2002 to 2012 he was Artistic Director of the Fondazione i Teatri di Reggio Emilia. In 2012 he received the Premio Oscar della Lirica for Best Director.
