About

Cornelia Beskow is a young Swedish lyric dramatic soprano with a sonorous voice and remarkable stage presence. She was the winner of the 2017 Lauritz Melchior International Singing Competition, where she was awarded all the prizes; first prize, audience’s prize, orchestra’s prize and the youth prize.

Education

Already at an early age, Cornelia Beskow started studying music. At the age of 10 she joined the Music elementary school in Stockholm, where she sang in the choir and also practiced the violin and guitar. She started taking singing lessons at the age of 13, which led her to The Junior Academy of Music and later The Lied Interpretation Class at Vadstena College. Beskow holds higher education degrees from both The Royal Danish Opera Academy (2009-2012, advanced postgraduate diploma in music) and The University College of Opera in Stockholm (2013-2015, Master’s degree).

Experience

In December 2012 Beskow made her professional debut as The Fox in Janacek's The Cunning Little Vixen at the Royal Theater in Copenhagen. Since then, she has been a frequent guest soloist there, earning stage experience by appearing in roles such as Annina in La Traviata, Marianne Leitmetzerin in Das Rosenkavalier, Axinja in Lady Macbeth from the Mtsensk district, Der Hüter der Schwelle in Die Frau ohne Schatten and also Sister Rose in Dead man Walking.

Outside of Copenhagen, Beskow has performed the role of Santuzza in Cavalleria Rusticanawith Norrköping Symphony orchestra and Wellgunde in Das Rheingold in Dalhalla in Sweden. In 2015 Beskow made her debut at the Royal Opera in Stockholm as Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni, and last spring she had her big breakthrough at that same stage, as Sieglinde in the Stockholm Ring, next to Nina Stemme’s Brünhilde; ”Cornelia Beskow's outstanding Sieglinde shone vocally with all the luminosity of a Northern late spring day” Bachtrack, May 2017

The success in Stockholm continued when Beskow took on the role of Chrysothemis in Elektra this season: ”Her meltdown during the carnage at the end was heartbreaking. Her voice was luminous, with a well-set lower register supporting impressive high notes.” Bachtrack, January 2018

Future engagements

In the spring of 2018 Cornelia Beskow is singing Tatjana in Eugen Onegin at the Royal Opera in Stockholm and next season includes Senta in Der fliegende Holländer, Freia in Das Rheingoldand symphony orchestra concerts with Mahler’s Rückert LiederWesendonck Lieder by Wagner and Chausson's Pòeme de l’amour et de la mer.
