The Coral Sant Jordi is a Catalan choir created in 1947 from a group of friends animated by Oriol Martorell, who from the beginning led not only a personal way of understanding and interpreting music , but also a certain social projection of the musical fact, linked and committed to the historical moment of the country. His contribution was essential: he was the soul and the energizer of a choral line that is in full force that can be understood from his own words: "(...) we wanted to sing everything. From Gregorian medieval melodies or the Llibre vermell de Montserrat to jazz music, without forgetting the great musicians of all time. "
With this eclectic spirit, combined with a commitment to Catalan music, the Choir has performed a long musical activity, which already has more than 1,700 concerts performed in Catalonia, in Spain and in other European countries, He has collaborated with prestigious directors and composers such as Sergiu Celibidache, Eduard Toldrà, Hermann Scherchen, Duke Ellington, Antoni Ros Marbà, Michel Corboz, Sergiu Comissiona, Edmon Colomer, László Heltay, Lawrence Foster and Lluís Llach, between others.
After sixty-five years of uninterrupted activity, he continues to be faithful to his initial orientation to transmit the heritage of choral music with the maximum technical and artistic rigor to the widest possible audience. Projected to the future from experience, it keeps alive the desire to overcome the challenges posed by the current panorama of choral singing, with a constant demand to improve the musical process in all aspects.
As of the year 2000, his titular director was Lluís Vila i Casañas until September 2016, which he was appointed by Oriol Castanyer.
The Coral essayed in the oratory annex to the church of Sant Felip Neri in Barcelona.
