About

Considered one of the leading mezzos of her generation, French mezzo-soprano Clémentine Margaine has gained international acclaim in recent seasons at theaters such as The Metropolitan Opera, Opéra national de Paris, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Bayerische Staatsoper, Teatro Colón, Teatro dell’ Opera di Roma, Grand Théâtre de Genève, Teatro di San Carlo, Opera Australia, and the Canadian Opera Company.

Clémentine Margaine begins the 2019/20 season with two sold-out concerts at the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, a programme of operatic repertoire at the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall in Moscow, the premiere of a new staged interpretation of Verdi’s Requiem at The Shed in New York City and the Philharmonie Berlin, and Berlioz’ L’Enfance du Christ in Lyon. In January, she sings Amneris in Aida at Barcelona’s Gran Teatre del Liceu, followed by performances as Fidès in Meyerbeer’s Le Prophète at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, after which she returns to the role of Amneris, this time with the Canadian Opera Company. She then sings Chausson’s Poème de l’amour et de la mer at the Radio France Auditorium in Paris and joins Jonas Kaufmann for a European concert tour that takes them to Brussels, Paris, and Bordeaux. Her last performances of the season include performances of Carmen at the Liceu and for her return to the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples.

She made her respective debuts at The Metropolitan Opera and the Opéra national de Paris during the 2016/17 season in this signature role. Highlights from the 2018/19 season included the title role in Carmen at the Metropolitan Opera and Dulcinée in Don Quichotte at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. Of her Dulcinée, Festspiele Forum raved: “Clémentine Margaine was also outstanding with her rich, dark mezzo voice, which was present in all registers. She mastered the leaps and bounds of the part with dreamlike certainty.”

In the 2017/18 season, Margaine made several significant debuts: as Fidès in Meyerbeer’s Le Prophète at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and Amneris in Aida with Opera Australia; her house debut at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona as Léonor in Donizetti’s La Favorite; and her debut at the Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse as the title role in Carmen. In 2018, Clémentine made her Carnegie Hall debut with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra led by Riccardo Muti, part of a five-city, eight-concert East Coast tour with the ensemble. Margaine began the 2015/16 season with her debut at the Washington National Opera as Carmen, subsequently performing the same role for her debuts at the Canadian Opera Company and Teatro dell’ Opera di Roma.

She also made her debut at the Musikverein in Vienna in Mendelssohn’s Elijah with the Orchestre national de France. In June of 2016, Margaine made her Opera Australia debut as Carmen. In July of 2016, she debuted with the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra in Berlioz’s Roméo et Juliette, under Stéphane Denève. In August of the same year, Margaine gave a triumphant performance as Rebecca in Il Templario for her debut at the Salzburg Festival. She also made her critically acclaimed debut at the Lyric Opera of Chicago as Dulcinée in autumn 2016. Shortly after graduating from the Paris Conservatory, Margaine was named the “révélation classique” and awarded the Special Jury Prize at the Concours International de Marmande. She subsequently joined the ensemble of the Deutsche Oper Berlin, where she sang her first performances of Carmen, a role for which she has now become internationally known for and has since portrayed in New York City, Munich, Rome, Naples, Washington, Dallas, and Toronto. Margaine also starred at the Deutsche Oper Berlin as Marguerite in the new production of Berlioz’s La Damnation de Faust and as Dalila in Saint-Saëns’s Samson et Dalila. In 2015, she made her debut at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires in her first performances of Charlotte in Werther. Also active as a concert soloist, Clémentine Margaine has sung Elijah in Berlin, the Mozart Requiem in Lisbon, and the Verdi Requiem in Budapest.
