Ancient Kourion, Kolossi Castle, Omodos & Winery Tour from Limassol
5
Cyprus is all rolling hills dotted with pretty villages. On this small group tour, you'll see where a legend was born, visit the ruins of Kourion, venture to the village of Omodos and cap off the day with a wine tasting. Eva, one of our local guides, says of this excursion, ‘You'll wander through layers of history, culture and mythology.'You'll dive straight into the past at Kourion, one of the most impressive archaeological sites in Cyprus. Visit the Roman baths and amble into the site's centrepiece, the Greco-Roman theatre. Concerts are still held to this day. While the mosaics of the trio of excavated houses known as those of Eustolius, the Gladiators and Achilles are as impressive as when they were laid down. The 15th-century Kolossi Castle is up next. This steeped-in-legend Crusader-built fortress is nowadays surrounded by blooming plants. Then, we'll head to mountain-fringed Omodos, where you'll enjoy a local lunch in a family-run taverna and have free time to wander around skinny cobbled streets lined with Byzantine buildings. It's Eva's favourite village. She says, ‘The charm of the stone houses, the tranquillity and peacefulness. It's as if it has sprung from a fairytale. I love dropping into one of the cafés and seeing locals have philosophical discussions, political arguments and a bit of gossip.' Plus, there's a winery tour, where you'll learn all about sweet commandaria wine – one of the oldest varieties in the world.

Small Group Tour of Troodos Villages with Kykkos and Lunch
The Troodos Mountains are a ‘majestic temple of Mother Nature', says Eva, one of our expert local guides. All pine-clad valleys dotted with remote stone villages and monasteries, these highlands are the spiritual heart of Cyprus. Eva adds, ‘This is where I lose myself and find my soul, when I inhale the freshness of the forests.' On this full day tour, you'll visit the steeped-in-legend Kykkos Monastery and three typical villages, including historic Omodos. As you journey up into the Troodos Mountains, the landscapes become progressively greener. There's a pit stop for a coffee in the village of Pano Platres, nestled in a pine forest. From here, we continue meandering through the mountains towards Kykkos Monastery. Eva says, ‘It's a monastery of legends, with walls plastered in handmade mosaics and Byzantine frescoes. An extraordinary sense of calm envelops you as you enter it.'It's a short drive next to Pedoulas next. Here, you'll have a traditional Troodos lunch made from locally sourced ingredients in a family-owned restaurant. In the afternoon, we'll head south to what Eva calls the ‘fairytale village' of Omodos. Enjoy a guided tour of its Byzantine streets and a visit to the richly decorated Orthodox church of the Holy Cross. Eva adds, ‘Omodos is the authentic Cyprus – charming stone houses, cobbled alleys and cafés where locals meet for philosophical discussions, political arguments and a little bit of gossip.'
