About
Christoph Breidler is a conductor and composer who dedicates himself to the decoding of music in his works and his work. Inspired by Gustav Mahler, Richard Strauss and Pierre Boulez, he sees the conductor and composer as tools of mediation, as researchers who pervade music and make it tangible at its core.
Born in 1986 in Graz, Christoph Breidler received his first musical education at the age of four. In Vienna he began studying piano at the age of 16. After studying composition with Michael Jarrell at the University of Music and Performing Arts, he expanded his spectrum to include studies in electro-acoustic composition and orchestral conducting, and later concert harpsichord. He completed his studies at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna in 2012 as a MA. At the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, Breidler studied with Zhu Shi-Rui studying composition with an emphasis on Chinese music. He has completed numerous master classes, including Karl-Heinz Stockhausen, Enno Poppe, Beat Furrer and Pierre-Laurent Aimard.
For his compositions Breidler was awarded the Theodor Körner Prize for the Promotion of Science and Art and the Prize for Young Composers of the International Music Festival Heidelberger Frühling. He is a laureate of Ensemblia-Mönchengladbach and Salieri heute, a finalist of TONALi, alumnus of the "Akademie Musiktheater heute" and was awarded a scholarship by the Dr. med. Robert and Lina Thyll-Dürr.
In addition to his compositional work, he has been engaged as a study director with conducting duties since the 2014/15 season at the Komische Oper Berlin. In 2016 he made his debut here with Marius Felix Lange's "Ghost of Canterville" and since then has directed performances of several productions. In 2018, the first joint CD recording with the Duisburg Philharmonic was born. He collaborated with conductors such as Vladimir Jurowski and Henrik Nánási as well as renowned opera directors such as Barrie Kosky, Andreas Homoki, Calixto Bieito, Harry Kupfer and Robert Carsen. Prior to that he worked as Kapellmeister at the Theater Aachen. With Platypus, a co-founded association for new music, he designed with great success the "Composers Marathon", a festival for young contemporary music. His main interest is contemporary music.
He conducted performances u. a. with the Orchestra of the Komische Oper Berlin, Symphony Orchestra Aachen, Duisburg Philharmonic, Kyoto IMSFO, Ensemble Mosaik, Ensemble Collective Berlin, Ensemble Lux: NM and Ensemble Platypus. His works have been performed by renowned orchestras, ensembles and soloists, including the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Staatstheater Cottbus, Sinfonietta92, Studio Musikfabrik, Dorothea von Albrecht, Ensemble Phidias and many more.
