Chantal Thomas first studied at the Higher National School of Art in Dijon and then at the Higher College of Decorative Arts in Paris.
Earning a diploma in stage design in 1982, she founded her own decor workshops in Paris in 1984 and created her first sets in 1987 for Jean-Louis Martin-Barbaz. Since 1988, she has collaborated regularly with Laurent Pelly, both in the theatre (namely, Le Roi nu (The Naked King) by Yevgeny Shvarts, Jacques ou La Soumission (Jack, or the Submission) by Ionesco, Talking Heads by Alan Bennett, Mille francs de recompense (A reward of a Thousand Francs) by Victor Hugo) as well as on musical productions (Et Vian ! and En avant la zique at the Grande Halle de La Villette) and operas: Orphée aux Enfers (the Grand Théâtre, Geneva and the Lyon Opera), La Belle Hélène (the Théâtre du Châtelet, the Santa Fe Opera and the English National Opera), Les Contes d'Hoffmann (the Lausanne Opera, and the Lyon Opera), Platée, Les Sept Péchés capitaux (The Seven Deadly Sins), Ariadne auf Naxos, L'Elisir d'amore, Giulio Cesare, I Puritani (the Paris Opera), Les Boréades (The Lyon and Zurich Operas), La Grande Duchesse de Gérolstein (the Théâtre du Châtelet), L'Amour des Trois Oranges (the Amsterdam Opera), La Vie parisienne (the Lyon Opera), La Fille du regiment (Covent Garden, the Metropolitan Opera, the Vienna Staatsoper, the San Francisco Opera, the Liceu in Barcelona), La Voix humaine and Bluebeard’s Castle ( Lyon Opera), Pelléas & Mélisande (Theater an der Wien), La Traviata (the Santa Fe Opera and the Teatro Regio in Turin), Manon, Robert le Diable (Covent Garden), L’Étoile (the Amsterdam Opera), Don Pasquale (Glyndebourne). She has also worked with numerous directors, including Michel Hermon, Étienne Pommeret, Frédéric Bélier-Garcia, Denise Chalem (Dis à ma fille que je pars en voyage (Tell My Daughter I Went on a Trip)), Mirella Giardelli, Laura Scozzi, and Michel Rostain (costume design). She also created the sets for the Richard Brunel production of Le Nozze di Figaro at the 2012 Aix Festival.
Projects: Le Roi Carotte by Offenbach at the Lyon Opera, and Gounod’s Le Médecin malgré lui at the Grand Théâtre in Geneva.
