About

Born in Livorno, Carlo Cigni studied at the Conservatorio “Arrigo Boito” in Parma, and then continued under the tutelage of Fernanda Piccini. In 1999 he made his debut at Teatro Comunale in Florence with La Serva padrona, combining the Pergolesi and Paisello versions; from the beginning of his career he has distinguished himself as a performer with elegant presence and perfect style.

Following on from his success in Parma, a long series of important debuts began, starting with Colline in La Bohème at La Scala (directed by Franco Zeffirelli); Teatro Regio di Parma; Opèra de Marseille and Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, and Papageno in Die Zauberflöte at Teatro CEL in Livorno.
Carlo Cigni’s European debut was at Opéra National du Rhin in Strasbourg as Timur in Turandot, a role which he repeated along with Il Trovatore at Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, at the Opèra de Marseille and Teatro Comunale in Florence. He also appeared as Raimondo in Lucia di Lammermoor at Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa, a role which he later interpreted at Opernhaus Zurich, directed by Robert Carsen.
He made other numerous debuts at Teatro Regio in Turin in Le Nozze di Figaro; Creonte Medea at Teatro Verdi in Sassari and at Sao Carlos di Lisbona; Il Conte Rodolfo La Sonnambula in Florence and at Teatro della Maestranza in Sevilla; Macbeth at Teatro San Paolo in Brazil, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Teatro Comunale di Bologna and in Palermo; Angelotti, Tosca at the Royal Opera House conducted by Antonio Pappano, and in Aida (the King), at Scala for a new staging by Zeffirelli, and under the baton of R. Chailly. Carlo Cigni’s most recent debut was in April 2018 in the role of Scarpia in Tosca’s production in the Gran Teatro Nacional de Lima.

Carlo performed at La Scala in Maria Stuarda (Talbot), conducted by P.L. Pizzi, closed the season at Teatro Verdi in Trieste in Trovatore, and took part into Aida Tournèe of Teatro alla Scala in Israel, Japan and Argentina. Numerous debuts followed, at Arena di Verona in Turandot staged by F. Zeffirelli and conducted by P.Domingo, at Helsinki in Requiem of G. Verdi, at Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Guillaume Tell conducted by A. Pappano (which has recorded for EMI), at Opéra de Paris in Otello and Tosca, at Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich in I Capuleti e iMontecchi, the role of Fiesco at Teatro Comunale in Bologna and La Clemenza di Tito (Publio) conducted by R. Abbado and directed by G. Vick.
In 2014 performed for the first time in Les Contes d’Hoffmann (Lindforf/ Coppelius/ Dapertutto/ Miracle) at The Israeli Opera, Tel Aviv under the direction of Harry Kupfer, and at the Theatre de la Monnaie in Bruxelles, Rigoletto, at Lirico in Cagliari in Turandot and again at Opéra Bastille de Paris in Il Barbiere di Siviglia (new production by Damiano Michieletto) and in Tosca (new production by Pierre Audi). He sings Ferrando in Il Trovatore, which inaugurated the season at San Carlo di Napoli, conducted by Nicola Luisotti with direction by Michał Znaniecki.He has previously worked with Bruno Bartoletti, Daniele Gatti, Zubin Mehta, Daniel Oren, Carlo Rizzi, Maurizio Benini, Riccardo Chailly, Daniel Barenboim, Michele Mariotti, Evelino Pidò, Giuliano Carella, Philippe Jordan, Marco Armiliato, and Carlo Montanaro.
In 2016 he sang Il Trovatore at Teatro Regio di Parma, Aida and Turandot at Arena di Verona, Raimondo in the new production of Lucia di Lammermoor, at Opera di Roma, conducted by Roberto Abbado. Most recently, Carlo performed the role of Hieros at a new critical edition of Le siège de Corinthe at the Rossini Opera Festival during summer of 2017, and the role of Simone in Gianni Schicchi in Amsterdam’s National Opera.
Carlo recently performed at the production of Rigoletto at the Teatro Regio Parma and Angelotti in Teatro San Carlo di Napoli .
His future plans include: Rigoletto at Teatro Dell’Opera Di Roma in December 2018. In 2019, he will be singing Zio Bonzo at the production of Madama Butterfly at De Nederlandse Opera in March, and singing Oroe at the Festival Rossini Pesaro in the summer.
