Singer, percussionist and Italian language teacher, Carla felt in love of traditional Neapolitan music about 20 years ago and has been singing and playing percussions of different traditions for 15 years with bands from Napoli, Bologna, Firenze, playing among festivals, wedding, or simple barbecue among Europe with joyful and emotion!
She is currently playing in Bologna with the guitarrist Antonio Stragapede, in the Neapolitan music duo Marulo canta Murolo; with the 25 years old marching band Banda Roncati; and with Craig Judelman and the Milksoup Orchestra, that plays a personal mix of Old American music, Ragtime, Bluegrass, Fiddle Tunes mixed with original Folk Italian Music. In the last 10 years she has held music workshops for children at Scuola Popolare di Musica Ivan Illich in Bologna and at the juvenile prison of Bologna and she works on the use of music and traditional songs in the teaching of Italian language to migrants and political refugees. With the singer and actress Valentina Turrini (O' Thiasos TeatroNatura Company), since 2010 she has been conducting the workshop SEMI that, besides taking place regularly in Bologna, meets different people and places, trying in each of these occasions to create new spaces for movement, expression and intercultural encounter through traditional songs and rhythms.
Specialized degree in Foreign Languages and Literatures at the University of Bologna, she studied Afro-Cuban folklore (percussions, dance and songs) and frame drums of the Mediterranean area in Napoli; songs of Italian tradition in Roma and Bologna and contemporary dance, body mime and air acrobatic.

Traditional Italian Rhythms, Dances And Songs
Since 2010 Carla Marulo and Valentina Turrini have lead a series of workshops of traditional songs and rhythms from various traditions entitled SEMI: Spazio di Espressione, Movimento, Incontro (Seeds: Space of Movement, Expression, Meeting). After many interesting workshops in Italy, SEMI lands overseas at Lark Camp, where Carla Marulo will focus on traditional Italian dances of the family of tarantella (expecially tammurriata from Naples - Campania and pizzica pizzica from Salento - Puglia) and some polyphonic songs of the Italian tradition - songs of love, migration and anti-fascist resistance. We will learn songs in Italian and in dialects from regions from the South of Italy to the North, including Campania, Puglia, Lazio and Emilia Romagna. We will learn in the traditional way - without sheet music - through listening and imitation and with the help of little physical and vocal exercises that prepare our body to sing and dance. Besides exploring the different themes, timbres and rhythms of the songs, we will learn about the place, function and cultural context in which they were born. Listening to what emotions arise in us and fnding the way to sing the songs in our own voice ... as the singer Maria Grillini said, 'con grazia e sentimento' - with grace and feeling! Join us with any tambourine or just with your bodies and voice! No previous experience or musical skills required, just a desire to listen, share and have fun!
