About

Cajai Fellows Johnson is a dancer, actress, and fine artist from Bloomfield, CT. Her mother, Catherine Fellows, has been the Dance Director at Central Connecticut State University for over 45 years; her father, Jaimoe, is a founding member and drummer of the Allman Brothers Band. Cajai began performing as young as 18 months old and started her professional performance career at age 9.

At age 10, Cajai was cast as Young Nala in her first big show and in the first national touring company of The Lion King. She was most recently seen performing in Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids Easter Bonnet Competition at Broadways’ Minskoff Theater. After graduating from the Art Institute of Boston with a BFA in Fine Arts, she briefly attended the Ailey School in New York City, where she currently resides. During the summer of 2016, she attended a contemporary ballet program in Croatia and performed with the Proarsiton Ballet of Italy. She also completed the musical theater/jazz program at Jacob’s Pillow, directed by Tony award winning choreographer, Chet Walker. Cajai spent the 2017-2018 as a Knicks City Dancer and performed regularly at Madison Square Garden, the World's Most Famous Arena.  She has performed at Lincoln Center with the Metropolitan Opera in The Merry Widow and will be returning for the 2018-2019 season for Aida, La Traviata and Adrianna Lacouveur.

Parallel to her performance career, Cajai continues her artistic pursuit by producing large-scale, charcoal, realistic drawings of dancers and other artists. After arriving at the Ailey School, Cajai felt inspired by all the bodies that moved along side her and the stories that brought them to dance. She started creating portraits of her classmates, as well as other prominent African-American performers in the city. Cajai begins her portraits by photographing her subjects and works from the photos. Another of Cajai's growing collections focuses on smaller, intimate, gestural studies. Having grown up behind the scenes of the music industry, Cajai is heavily influenced by rock and roll music and culture, which comes through in her style and subject matter. As she attends many music shows around the country, Cajai collects used drumheads from drummers after shows to use as a canvas for her drawings of dancers or instruments. Cajai currently lives in New York City and enjoys dance classes at Steps, Broadway Dance Center, Peridance and the Ailey School. She also models and was recently featured on Allure's website in their video, "The Evolution of Piercings." She spent many years studying and performing with The Albano Ballet Company and is a current member of the contemporary dance company, ZEST Collective. Past theater credits include: Disney’s The Lion King National Tour, High School Musical Live (regional), and My Favorite Year (regional).
