Born in Split, Croatia, Ante Jerkunica received his musical education at the Music School of Split. 2004 he made his Diploma at the Music Academy of Lovran, Master classes with Renata Scotto and Olivera Miljacovic.
In 2005 he won the first price at the 1st National Competition in Zagreb. Opera performances followed in Croatia at the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb and at the Split National Theatre with roles like Oroveso/"Norma", Raimondo/"Lucia di Lammermoor", Wurm/"Luisa Miller", Gremin/”Eugene Onegin” as well as Grandinquisitore/“Don Carlo“ at the Opera Festival in Split and Mozart’s “Requiem” at the Zadar Music Festival. Ante Jerkunica has represented Croatia at the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition 2007.
n February 2006 Ante Jerkunica made his debut in Germany at the Staatstheater Hannover with Sarastro/"Zauberflöte". A further guest engagement led him to the Deutsche Opera Berlin, where he became a fellow of the F.-J. Weisweiler-Foundation in autumn 2006. Since August 2007 Ante Jerkunica is a member of the ensemble of the Deutsche Oper Berlin, where he sings Sparafucile/“Rigoletto“, Il Re/“Aida“, Lord Capulet/„I Capuleti e i Montecchi“, Basilio/“Il Barbiere di Siviglia“, Steffano Colonna/“Rienzi“, Banco/”Macbeth”, Vieux Hebreux/”Samson et Dalila” and Fafner/”Rheingold/“Siegfried“, Grand Inquisitore/”Don Carlo”, Daland/”Holländer”, Landgraf/“Tannhäuser“, Gremin/“Eugen Onegin“, to name a few.
Guest engagements led the artist to the Théâtre de la Monnaie Bruxelles, to Hamburg Staatsoper, Bilbao, Staatsoper Berlin, Opera Cologne, Opéra de Lyon, Barcelona, de Nederlandse Opera Amsterdam, Shanghai (tour of Opera Cologne), Munich Staatsoper, Frankfurt. In 2014 he made his debut at Opera Bastille Paris – Colline/”La Bohème” and Sarastro/”Zauberflöte”.
In summer 2008 he made his debut at the Salzburger Festspiele and was re-invited in summer 2009.
A steady relationship was formed with Vlaamse Opera Antwerpen/Gent – there he sang Sarastro, Marke/”Tristan und Isolde”, Chowantschina and Landgraf/”Tannhäuser”.
On the concert stage Ante Jerkunica appeared a.o. with Verdi´s „Requiem“ in Schaffhausen, Basel and at the Philharmonie Berlin, with “Missa Solemnis” at the Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon and with Dvorák´s “Requiem” at the Gran Teatro del Liceu in Barcelona and again Berlin Philharmonie.
Ante Jerkunica will stay member of Deutsche Oper Berlin. Future plans also include his regular return to Vlaamse Opera as well as his debut at Teatro Real Madrid, Opéra du Rhin Strasbourg and Seattle opera house.
