Mezzo-soprano Andrea Coleman is currently a full-time member of the Metropolitan Opera Chorus. She made her solo debut with the Metropolitan Opera as Melanie in their new production of Die Fledermaus for the 2013-2014 season.
Her previous opera credits include the role of Dryade in Ariadne auf Naxos and Antonia’s Mother in The Tales of Hoffman with Boston Lyric Opera. Ms. Coleman also spent two seasons with Minnesota Opera as a Resident Artist performing Trigesta in the American premiere of Richard Kaiser’s The Fortunes of King Croesus, Zulma in L’italiana in Algeri, a wood sprite in Rusalka, Antonia’s Mother in Les Contes d'Hoffmann, Mallika in Lakmé, Marcellina in Le Nozze di Figaro, and covered the mainstage role of Ma Joad in the world premiere of Ricky Ian Gordon’s The Grapes of Wrath.
Ms. Coleman has spent summer seasons as a vocal fellow at Tanglewood Music Center and as a Glimmerglass Opera Young American Artist. At Tanglewood, she performed in five voice recitals including a concert of the "Lied der Waldtaube" from Schoenberg's Gurrelieder with the Tanglewood Music Center Chamber Orchestra. Ms. Coleman has also sung with the Duluth Festival Opera as Berta in The Barber of Seville and at Glimmerglass Opera sang the role of Karolka in Janacek’s Jenufa. She also covered various roles there, including the Young Nun in the world premiere of Stephen Hartke’s The Greater Good, Edith and Kate in The Pirates of Penzance, and the French and German Mothers in Britten’s Death In Venice.
In Boston with New England Conservatory, Ms. Coleman made appearances as Dorabella in Cosí fan tutte, Jo in Mark Adamo’s Little Women, Madame de la Haltière in Cendrillon, the Third Lady in The Magic Flute and Mrs. Grose in Britten’s Turn of the Screw. Other credits include Katisha in The Mikado and Edith in The Pirates of Penzance with the University of Kansas, the Duchess in The Gondoliers with the Harvard-Radcliffe Gilbert and Sullivan Players and Mrs. Noye in Britten’s Noye’s Fludde with the Lawrence Chamber Orchestra.
Ms. Coleman also has extensive oratorio and solo experience, performing in Honegger’s Le Roi David with the Back Bay Chorale as an Artist-In-Residence, Handel’s Messiah with the University of Kansas, Mendelssohn’s Elijah in Sudbury, Massachusetts, Wagner’s Wesendonk Lieder with the New England Conservatory, Augusta Read Thomas’s Sun Songs and György Ligeti’s Sippal, dobbal, nádihegedüvel with the New England Conservatory Percussion Ensemble, Vivaldi’s Glora, RV 589 with the Grace Chapel of Lexington, Massachusetts and Mozart’s Requiem with the Kaw Valley Community Chorus. She is also a member of the eight-member a cappella group, Octarium, based in Kansas City.
Her work with the Boston Lyric Opera/Opera New England’s outreach program included performances as the Marquise of Berkenfield in The Daughter of the Regiment and in 2006 she was the recipient of Boston Lyric Opera’s Stephen Shrestinian Award for Excellence. In 2007, Ms. Coleman was awarded 2nd place in the International Schubert Club Scholarship Competition and 1st place in the Nebraska District Metropolitan Opera Competition. Ms. Coleman is a native of Nebraska and earned her Masters of Music degree from New England Conservatory and her Bachelors of Music from the University of Kansas.
