About

The Almere Youth Symphony Orchestra (AJSO) is a Dutch youth symphony orchestra from Almere. The AJSO fell under the arts center the Kunstlinie, Almere, but started its own foundation in 2013.

The orchestra plays music ranging from light to classical, and gives around 10 concerts a year. The orchestra is conducted by conductor Hans Welle. Rehearsals take place on Tuesday evenings in the central hall of Schouwburg Almere. Currently the orchestra has around eighty members.

The mayor of Almere, Franc Weerwind, is the patron of the AJSO. His predecessors Annemarie Jorritsma, Hans Ouwerkerk and Ralph Pans were also patron / patron of the orchestra.

Hans Welle started in 1987 with a small club of three members, initially under the name the Muppets. Orchestra members were added every year, growing into an orchestra of over 50 members. From 16 February 1997 the orchestra was given a new name: the Almere Youth Symphony Orchestra. Later the orchestra received orchestral clothing (blouses), and the AJSO got its own identity. The orchestra now consists of around eighty young people.

In 2002 the AJSO made its first CD with light music, a project on the occasion of the orchestra's 15th anniversary.

On 4 March 2006, the AJSO won the preliminary round of the National Competition for Youth Symphony Orchestras 2006. The AJSO played works by Edvard Grieg, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and R.W. Smith. At the final on April 23, 2006, the orchestra achieved a 2nd place.
