The British conductor and pianist Alexander Soddy was born in Oxford and was formed as chorister at the Magdalen College. Furthermore he studied conducting and singing at the Royal Academy of Music and was a piano pupil of Michael Dussek. He then went on to study musicology and analysis at Cambridge University with a choral scholarship from Selwyn College. After graduating in 2004, he was immediately appointed as répétiteur and conductor at the National Opera Studio in London. During this time he received many awards and prizes.
In October 2005 he was engaged at the Staatsoper Hamburg as a répétiteur, and was quickly appointed to the position of 1st Assistant of Music Director Simone Young, soon with regular conducting duties at the Staatsoper and with the Philharmoniker Hamburg.
From 2008 to 2010 Alexander Soddy led the Hamburg Staatsoper International Opera Studio in productions of Cavalli's La Calisto, contemporary operas by Christian Jost and John Tavener and Rameau's Les Indes Galantes.
During the 2008/2009 season he finally made his debut in the main house of the Staatsoper Hamburg, conducting Mozart's Die Zauberflöte with great success. In the very same season he overtook the musical direction of the operas L'Elisir d'amore, Hänsel und Gretel, Il Barbiere di Siviglia and again Die Zauberflöte.
Between 2010 and 2012 he was engaged as Kapellmeister in Hamburg, conducting, among others, La Bohème, Rigoletto, Don Giovanni, Bliss, La Traviata and Lucia di Lammermoor. Alexander Soddy also debuted at the Bayerische Staatsoper and the Staatsoper Unter den Linden Berlin, both times with Die Zauberflöte, followed by the debut at Royal Swedish Opera Stockholm with La Bohème the following season.
During the 2012/2013 season he introduced himself to the audience at the Stadttheater Klagenfurt with the new production of Weber's Der Freischütz and with Mozart's Idomeneo. As guest conductor at the Staatsoper Hamburg he led Die Fledermaus, Don Giovanni and Gounod's Faust. In the new production of the Ring in Bayreuth he took over the position of Musical Assistant of Kirill Petrenko.
Since the 2013/14 season Alexander Soddy is music director at the Stadttheater Klagenfurt and has led with great personal success the new productions of Rosenkavalier and Macbeth. In the very same season he was again guest at the Staatsoper Hamburg with a new production of Bizet’s Carmen. A production of Prokofieff's The Love for Three Oranges followed in Klagenfurt.
In 2014/2015 he debuted at the Oper Frankfurt with La Cenerentola. In Klagenfurt he led the premieres of Fledermaus, Cavalleria / Pagliacci and Les Dialogues des Carmelites.
In the current season Alexander Soddy returned to the Staatsoper Berlin with Der Freischütz and Die Zauberflöte and to the Royal Opera Stockholm with Madama Butterfly. He will debut at the Oper Köln with La Cenerentola. In the next seasons he will return to the Bayerische Staatsoper and debut at the Wiener Staatsoper and the Semperoper in Dresden.
