About

Born in Sydney, Baritone Alexander Hargreaves trained at The Royal College of Music, The International Opera Academy, Belgium, and The University of York. At the RCM he was supported by The Countess of Munster Musical Trust and a Cuthbert Smith Award.

Recent and notable engagements include the roles of Moralès in Carmen, Second Knight in Parsifal, Papageno in The Magic Flute, Schaunard (cover) in La bohème, Hermann Ortel (cover) and Konrad Nachtigall (cover) in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Dancairo (cover) in Carmen, Ceprano (cover) in RigolettoPhilippe (cover) and General Modigliani (cover) in Two Weddings, One Bride, Vicomte Cascada (cover) in The Merry Widow and Yamadori (cover) in Madama Butterfly for Opera Australia, The Surveyor in Road Rage by Orlando Gough for Garsington Opera, Hades in Followers by Julian Philips for Glyndebourne Festival Opera, La Mort in La Mort au Bal Masqué by Joachim Brackx, premiered in Belgium, Melisso in Alcina, The Shepherd in The Three Strangers by Elizabeth Machonchy, Adonis in Venus and Adonis, Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle, Orff’s Carmina Burana and Rutter’s Mass of the Children.

Alexander is also an accomplished director. Recent work includes Hänsel und Gretel and L’elisir d’amore for The Australian Institute of Music, Die Fledermaus and Iernin by George Lloyd for Surrey Opera and The Magic of Mozart and Viva Verdi! for Devon Opera. He has assisted directors Jacopo Spirei and Christopher Cowell at Co-Opera Co. and Danish National Opera respectively.

Upcoming work includes the roles of Cappadocian in Salome, The Imperial Commissioner in Madama Butterfly, Fouquier-Tinville and Schmidt in Andrea Chénier and Bengtsson in The Ghost Sonata for Opera Australia.
