Ad graduated from the Amsterdam Theater School in 1997.
In the years that followed he developed into a versatile actor. He played roles in classical pieces such as Midsummer Night's Dream (RO theater), Gijsbrecht van Aemstel (The Play Theater) and Karakter (Hummelinck Stuurman), in newly written pieces such as Shall We Call It Love, Goedbloed and The Fourth Empire of Peer Wittenbols for the Eastern Pole , and he was shown for 10 summers in the large spectacle performances in the open air theater of Het Amsterdamse Bos, including Wat u wilt (Shakespeare), De Kaukaksiche Krijtkring (Brecht), the title role in Ivanov (Chekhov) and Don Q (Jeroen van den Mountain).
In musicals and music theater performances he has played major roles in, among others, Ciske de Rat, Mamma Mia, Grand Hotel, Love Story, and Amandla! Mandela. In the successful classic The Sound of Music, he played the lead role of Kapitein von Trapp. In 2011, Ad received the John Kraaijkamp Musical Award for his role in Spring Awakening.
Ad can also be seen regularly on television. In series such as Baantjer, Flikken Maastricht, Flikken Rotterdam, Doctor Tinus, Moordvrouw, Amsterdam-E.V.A., La Famiglia, and the hospital series CMC.
On the silver screen he appeared in films such as Lepel, All Is Love, The Storm, Lek, Lucia de B., De Helleveeg, Kneeling On A Bed Violins and Riphagen.
Ad recently appeared on television as a detective in the popular drama series Klem, on stage as Meister Bruis in the great family musical Ciske de Rat, as Harold in the musical The Full Monty and as Dick in the beautiful musical The Bridges of Madison County.
In the summer of 2019 he played the father, Bruce, in the moving Fun Home in the Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam.
