Abongile Fumba was born in a small town called Butterworth in the Eastern Cape. She was introduced to opera when she started high school at Msobomvu Senior Secondary by her choir conductor Mr Sibusiso Njeza in 2005. In 2010 she came to study a performer’s diploma in opera at the University of Cape Town, where she graduated in 2014.

Abongile Fumba participated as a chorus member in UCT/Cape Town Opera collaborations, for example ‘Rake’s progress’ and ‘The Tales of Hoffmann’. In 2012 she was invited to be part of the Schleswig-Holstein music festival choir in Germany. In 2014 she sang the role of Mother Jeanne in ‘Dialogues of the Carmelites’ by Francis Poulenc as well as Modestina in Gioachino Rossini’s ‘Il viaggio a Reims’ and was also 3rd prize winner in the annual Schock singing competition held at the Baxter Theatre Centre. She was also a chorus member with the Cape Town Opera chorus in the Bryn Terfel gala concert and in 2015 she toured with Cape Town Opera to Spain.

After further studies with Virginia Davids, Abongile Fumba received her second diploma in Cape Town in 2017. In January 2018 she won the singing competition of the Masterclass of the Johannesburg International Mozart Festival, which is rewarded with a one-year study at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Cologne.
