This concert opens with Thomas Tomkins’s seldom-heard verse anthems—elegant, witty counterpoint composed for Christmas Day and the subsequent feasts of St Stephen, St John the Evangelist and the Holy Innocents—where intimate solo passages unfold alongside refined chamber textures. At its heart lies Palestrina’s expressive Mass setting, drawn from his own motet Dies sanctificatus, whose luminous harmonies capture both the wonder and joy of the season.
