Programme
Overview
Carlos Simon’s 'Warmth from Other Suns' evokes the Great Migration in a stirring three-movement journey. The Takács Quartet frames this modern masterpiece with Haydn and Brahms classics. Experience harmony across eras in an unforgettable concert evening.Drawing on Isabel Wilkerson’s acclaimed chronicle of the Great Migration, Carlos Simon’s 'Warmth from Other Suns' unfolds as a three-movement odyssey from departure to arrival. Rich with blues-inflected motifs, syncopated energy and lyrical intensity, the work conjures the emotional contours of African American families leaving the rural South in search of new beginnings. Performed by the Wigmore Hall Associate Artists, the Takács Quartet transforms Simon’s vivid gestures into a compelling sonic tapestry, framed by Haydn’s poised D minor Quartet and Brahms’s warm-hearted B-flat major Quartet. Subtle shifts in timbre and dynamic trace a musical arc from dusky farewells to the tentative glow of dawn, forging an immersive dialogue between past and present. The result is a profoundly moving chamber-music experience that celebrates resilience, memory and the enduring pursuit of home.
