Programme
Overview
Experience Steven Osborne’s masterful exploration of Schubert, beginning with intimate arrangements of two Schwanengesang songs and the early Allegretto in C major. The evening culminates in the profound emotional landscapes of Schubert’s final piano sonatas, where grief, hope and transcendent beauty intertwine.Renowned pianist Steven Osborne presents a programme of Schubert’s poignant late works, beginning with his own refined settings of two songs from Schwanengesang and the early Allegretto in C major, D.346. These opening pieces, rich in song-like lyricism and tender phrasing, lead seamlessly into the composer’s final sonatas. Osborne’s interpretation of the Sonata in C minor, D.958, and the Sonata in A major, D.959 captures both the quiet introspection and sweeping drama that define these masterpieces. Eschewing any overt sense of morbidity, Osborne illuminates Schubert’s balance of grief, hope and transcendent beauty—each movement revealing profound emotional complexity. Listeners will be enthralled by the warmth of his tone, the clarity of his touch and the depth of his insight, in an evening that celebrates Schubert’s enduring genius.
