Programme
Overview
Timothy Ridout’s Viola Day transports you from the poised elegance of Alessandro Rolla’s Duo in F to the inventive richness of Lionel Tertis’s three-viola take on Beethoven’s Trio. With Shulman’s reflective Theme and Variations followed by a spirited, folk-infused Czech Suite, this recital celebrates the viola’s lyrical depth and vibrant character.Under the artistry of violist Timothy Ridout, Viola Day unfolds as an elegant homage to the instrument’s expressive voice. The programme opens with Alessandro Rolla’s graceful Duo in F, its poised melodies giving way to the warm, resonant blend of three violas in Lionel Tertis’s masterful arrangement of Beethoven’s Trio in C Op. 87. Alan Shulman’s Theme and Variations then ushers in a contemplative interlude, its nuanced shifts casting a gentle introspection. Finally, Sancho Egnaño’s spirited reimagining of Dvořák’s Czech Suite sweeps the audience into an exuberant finale, where dance rhythms and bucolic charm come alive. Throughout, Ridout’s luminous tone and the ensemble’s seamless unity illuminate each work with renewed colour and depth.
