Pavel Kolesnikov and Samson Tsoy open the recital with a selection of Schubert’s most intimate piano works, their four hands weaving intricate lyricism at a single black grand piano. The programme unfolds with the spellbinding Schubert-inspired Trompe-l’œil, newly commissioned from Leonid Desyatnikov, an homage that juxtaposes familiar motifs with crisp modern textures and surprising harmonic twists. Joined by tenor Bogdan Volkov and cellist Adrian Brendel, the ensemble then explores Desyatnikov’s Dichterliebe und -leben: a song cycle that sets the absurdist writings of Daniil Kharms and the avant-garde poetry of Nikolay Oleynikov to evocative, cinematic soundscapes. Each movement unveils a new facet of Desyatnikov’s creative vision—touchstones of opera, echoes of film score drama, and reflections of poetic whimsy—culminating in an arresting synthesis of classical tradition and inventive exploration.
