Experience Mahler’s rediscovered youthful quartet movement alongside Mozart’s dramatic Piano Quartet No.1 and Schumann’s inexhaustible Op.47. Four master chamber musicians unite to bring these masterpieces to life in one unforgettable evening.In his mid-teens, Gustav Mahler sketched a piano quartet whose abandoned first movement lay hidden until his widow, Alma Mahler-Werfel, rediscovered it in the 1960s. Its yearning melodies, both tender and searching, open this evening’s programme, performed by a quartet of accomplished chamber musicians whose subtle interplay breathes new life into every phrase. The first half continues with Mozart’s Piano Quartet No.1, where drama and pathos emerge through dialogues between piano and strings, from intimate whispers to impassioned climaxes. After the interval, Schumann’s Piano Quartet in E-flat major, Op.47, unfolds with astonishing inventiveness: lyrical arias, playful interludes and fervent surges of Romantic spirit. Together, these works form an unforgettable tapestry of rediscovery, classical elegance and Romantic fervour, inviting listeners on a journey through three masters at pivotal moments of inspiration.
