Delight in Perti’s intimate portrait of the Tomb and Rossi’s vibrant fusion of recitative, instrumental colour and choral intensity.In this Holy Week programme, conductor William Christie returns to helm the ensemble he founded in 1979, Les Arts Florissants, in two rare treasures of early Baroque sacred music. Giacomo Antonio Perti’s Oratorio della Passione, first composed in 1685 and meticulously reimagined in subsequent revisions, unfolds as a tender, deeply expressive meditation on the Tomb scene, highlighted by soul-stirring solo recitatives and luminous continuo textures. Contrasting with this intimate drama, Luigi Rossi’s Oratorio per la Settimana Santa delivers a richly dramatic tapestry of declamatory recitative, shimmering instrumental interludes and resplendent choral writing that captures the raw intensity of the Passion narrative. Under Christie’s exacting interpretation and the ensemble’s agile virtuosity, these two oratorios promise a transformative journey through baroque devotion and poetic intensity.
