Programme
Overview
Discover the artistic spark ignited when baritone Johann Michael Vogl first inspired a young Franz Schubert. Join James Newby for a programme celebrating their creative friendship with stirring performances of Erlkönig, Ganymed and more.In 1813, a young Franz Schubert was irrevocably moved by Johann Michael Vogl’s portrayal of Orestes in Gluck’s Iphigenia in Tauris at Vienna’s Hofoper. Four years later, their meeting blossomed into a deep artistic friendship that inspired some of the composer’s most celebrated songs, from the ominous chase of Erlkönig to the celestial reverie of Ganymed. In this evocative recital, James Newby traces the profound bond between composer and vocalist, weaving a programme that delves into the drama, lyricism and poetic intensity that define their legacy. Experience the tension of Schubert’s ballads, the soaring melodies of his strophic odes and the intimate dialogue of voice and piano, all underpinned by the rich tradition of early 19th-century Viennese song.
