Step into a lunchtime concert that navigates the aftermath of WWII through two profound works. Olivier Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time meets Richard Strauss’s Four Last Songs, brought to life by soprano Renée Fleming and a chamber ensemble. An evocative tribute to endurance and renewal.In this powerful lunchtime programme, the shadow of the Second World War resonates through two landmark compositions. The concert opens with Olivier Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time, an apocalyptic work sketched in a prisoner-of-war camp and infused with imagery from the Book of Revelation. In the second half, Renée Fleming takes the stage in a chamber-scale performance of Richard Strauss’s Four Last Songs—valedictory meditations written in the wake of Nazi Germany’s defeat, filled with wistful beauty and quiet transcendence. Joined by clarinet, violin, cello and piano, Fleming’s luminous voice guides us from darkness toward a horizon of hope and renewal.
