Rediscover Philip Glass’s Ninth String Quartet – originally the haunting soundtrack to King Lear – in a vibrant five-movement concert arrangement by the Carducci String Quartet. Experience the exhilarating drive and radiant melodies of Mendelssohn’s Op. 44 No.1.In 2019, Philip Glass composed what would become his Ninth String Quartet as incidental music for a Broadway production of King Lear. Imagining what it must have sounded like for an audience in 1606, he transforms Shakespeare’s turmoil into five movements of shimmering motifs, insistent rhythms and transcendent stillness. Now presented in concert form by the Carducci String Quartet, this work unfolds with precise ensemble unity and emotional depth, guiding listeners from quiet, echoing passages to dramatic crescendos.
Following this immersive journey through Glass’s imagined Elizabethan soundscape, the quartet turns to Mendelssohn’s Op.44 No.1. Here, lively allegros, elegant lyricism and intricate interplay showcase the composer’s youthful Romantic spirit within a classical framework.
The concert juxtaposes Glass’s modern minimalism with Mendelssohn’s Romantic exuberance. Tickets £20 (£18 concessions).
